Being young always brings on the unknown. That is exactly the issue Marywood’s Baseball Head Coach Jason Thiel gets to tackle this upcoming season. “This is a team that’s led by mainly freshman”, says Coach Thiel. Jason Thiel also brought in 19 new players for the start of the 2018 season. This is only Jason Thiel’s 2nd full season. Last year he led the Pacers to a 15-22 record with 9 conference wins. “The team is very young but they have great athleticism and are just ready to get out there”, says Coach Thiel.
There are some highly notable returning starters this year. Sophomore 1st baseman Jake Schuster finished 2nd for the rookie of the year in their conference and Sophomore catcher Anthony Navarro turned into a great leader behind the plate a season ago. The Pacers also have a very versatile player on their hands. Sophomore Trevor Powers is a center fielder but he can also pitch. He can hit top of the lineup and has an extremely strong arm.
Coach Thiel wants his guys to lead by example and not just on the playing field but also in the classroom. The team definitely buys into what he is saying because the team’s grade point average is a solid 3.2. “The team philosophy is simple, be a family and be the definition of a student athlete”, says Coach Thiel.
The Marywood University Pacers started their season off with a win over Mount Saint Marys 3-2, but the second game of the double header was cancelled due to weather. The game was at the Duchess Stadium in New York. The ceiling is very high for the Pacers and with all the youth on this team, a fun and exciting season is sure to follow.
