No Pool. No Problem. The Wallenpaupack Swim Team does not have a pool to practice in, so they have to travel to various locations to get some swim time. Whether it’s at the Wallenpaupack lake estates, Fawn Lake, or at the Carbondale YMCA, Coach Stephanie Campbell and her assistant coaches Kim Kryzan and Nate Heinly have their team ready to go.
According to Coach Campbell, “the district has been very supportive and provides transportation but it’s still a very big disadvantage not having their own pool”. She also stated that they only get one hour in the pool and transportation cuts in to that time.
The Wallenpaupack swim program is having a successful season. But more importantly, the Buckhorns have over 50 swimmers this year as the program continues to get stronger. This program has literally been built from the ground up. Back in 2011, the team wasn’t even sponsored by the school and they didn’t even have a league. That did not deter Coach Campbell, when she became the head coach in 2014 as she continued the progress of strengthening the program.
In 2018, all that hard work and excellent coaching continues to pay off. Even with the obvious disadvantage, the coaching staff needs to be commended on their team’s hard work ethic and sheer determination. Coach Campbell has very high praise for her team. Coach Campbell says, the philosophy is simple, "Have fun, focus on small successes, and celebrate team goals”. A little adversity never hurt any team and has proven to really help the swim program. Hey, maybe someday they can get their own pool but maybe that’s just what makes the program so good.
